Discord or Telegram or both? Where should you build your community initially?

“To Discord or to Telegram that is the question” – Shakespeareweb3

The question of whether to use Telegram or Discord for community conversation in web3 has been a longstanding one. And while both platforms have their advantages, we believe that starting with Telegram is the best course of action.

For starters, Telegram is the easiest platform to use, with a web3 ethos and a simple interface - it is ideal. It's also worth noting that the platform is user-friendly on mobile devices, which is essential as most people primarily use their smartphones for various tasks.

On the other hand, Discord can be overwhelming, especially for those unfamiliar with the platform. And it is more suited to desktops. Another factor to consider is that Telegram provides a single stream of conversation, whereas Discord can be segmented, leading to fragmented and disjointed conversations. This is not what you want - especially early on.

We highly recommend that you take the lead in generating conversations frequently, especially during the early stages. This ensures that no important discussions are missed out on and helps establish a strong presence within the community.

While you can use various engagement tactics like polls, AMAs, and competitions to build community interest, the most effective way to create loyal supporters is by having the project lead engage directly with the community and answer their questions.

This personalized interaction makes community members feel valued and important, leading to increased engagement and loyalty. Remember the community you build should be a place where you want to hang out.

While there is a general perception that Discord is better suited for technical projects and communities, it's worth noting that many NFT communities call Discord home and skip Telegram completely.

Once you've reached a tipping point of engagement and have multiple conversation topics that have relevance to your project and need their own subsections, it's time to make the jump to Discord.

It's important to involve your community in this decision and to make sure that they're comfortable with the switch.

Finally, after making the jump to Discord, you could consider making the Telegram channel exclusively for announcements, and always remember to drive your community to Discord for more detailed conversations.

In conclusion, while both Telegram and Discord have their pros and cons, starting with Telegram is the best way to go. Once you've built up enough engagement and are ready to expand your community conversations, making the jump to Discord is the logical next step.
